“Rain stopped play” is a phrase familiar to cricket followers in England, where the climate is reliably unreliable.

Taking an auto-rickshaw to the mainland with Anu: my houseboy, “second pair of legs” and helping hand.

Following Sunday’s café breakfast, we rode straight into a boisterous but very good-natured Hindu procession heading for the temple.

Photograph taken by my son in Bluff, as he showed me some of New Zealand’s great beauty. I also took a picture of this landmark signpost – but to my chagrin, his was much better!

“Salva nos, Domine, vigilantes, custodi nos dormientes, ut vigil emus cum Christo et requiescamus in pace.
Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum:
Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel.”
Save us, Lord, while we are awake, protect us while we sleep,
that we may keep watch with Christ and rest with him in peace.
At last, all-powerful Master,
You give leave to your servant to go in peace, according to your promise.
For my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared for all nations,
The light to enlighten the Gentiles and give glory to Israel your people.

A beautiful week with my dear son and his lovely wife has passed all too quickly.
I head for North Island,
and a week of profound quietness..

All is beautiful and welcoming,
but autumn in New Zealand is just a little cooler than spring in Cochin.
The climate renders me reluctant to stroll outside..

In transit:
twelve hours in Singapore
made considerably easier by taking a room in one of the airport’s three Transit Hotels.

My tickets were booked some weeks ago.
This morning Anu, my houseboy, carefully packed my bags.
I head for distant shores.
It is time to say goodbye, for now.
