"Wading neck deep in a swamp, your revolver is neither use nor ornament until you have had time to clean it" Mary H. Kingsley (1897)

Handy Craft

After days of heavy, unrelenting rain, the skies and my spirits lighten.

A trip to the mainland beckons: time to visit my bank, investigate the local availability of large lampshades and visit a handicraft fair.

With three guests due next month, I decide to buy more bed linen. (Described locally as “bed sheets with pillow covers” or “diwan sets”.)

My purchases must now await the dhobi’s visit.

Is the dhobi a bit like Ocado?

    • Such is my isolation from all things British, that I had to google “Ocado”
In fact the dhobi has just been here. He comes 2 – 3 times a week – but always without warning. Shaji, Dalila and Sumant then sprint around the house, collecting sundry items to add to my laundry basket. He returns a few days later, with everything washed and ironed.
