New Dawns?

This morning Cochin’s sun rose on a marginally different world.

During October millions of Indians will vote in local government elections and yesterday was polling day for Cochin..

A new dawn will bring victories, defeats and a certain degree of indifference.

Politicians here promise dedication, devotion and diligence – for a price:

Whatever the result, little is likely to change.

  1. The same ritual (opportunity, privilege) will take place here next week …

That is such a great photo of the kitty wistfully sitting in the brush. Perhaps a metaphor for what we hope.

Are people with moustaches more trusted?

    • I’m not sure, but perhaps the converse is true. On reaching marriageable age, the vast majority of South Indian men sport a moustache. It’s a convention that might be threatened by the younger generation, reared on Indian MTV, pop videos and modern Bollywood romantic male leads.
I also notice that if I wear a moustache, strangers approach me speaking Malayalam, the local language. Once clean-shaved, it is assumed I am from north India, the Middle East or southern Europe!
