Neither Use Nor Ornament"Wading neck deep in a swamp, your revolver is neither use nor ornament until you have had time to clean it" Mary H. Kingsley (1897)
Was that the birthday cake throne zone? Were there speeches? I am going to start dropping some serious hints. These things can’t be rustled up overnight.
Having studiously avoided any project that would make me the centre of a celebration for almost my entire sixty years, when informed of the plans I felt something bordering on utter panic. But I could also see that I’d deeply upset people for whom I cared by appearing curmudgeonly: they only wanted to make me happy.
A party-organiser was employed to set up what you refer to as the “throne zone” Outside caterers provided amazingly tasty food – we are still enjoying the left-overs.
Yes, there were speeches – but as they were all in Malayalam, I still have no idea what was said!
I premedicated myself with several hefty dose of gin, and pre-instructed Anu – my trusty houseboy – to ensure my glass was never empty.
Be warned, I understand my loyal staff and kind friends have been planning this party for some considerable time. Perhaps you should make any preferences known well in advance.

Ooh, you had balloons – jelly too?
You are lucky to be cared about by so many people.

No jelly – but I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen it here.. Perhaps there might be problems getting it to set properly in this climate?
And yes, I am lucky… and very aware of how little I deserve such care..
